Vietnam Port Master Plan 2030: Building Ultra-Large Vessel Port Clusters

National master plan targets 1,249-1,494 million tons capacity and 46-54 million TEU by 2030, prioritizing international gateway port development.

The Prime Minister has approved the Master Plan for Vietnam's port system development through 2030, with 2050 vision setting ambitious targets: capacity of 1,249-1,494 million tons and 46.3-54.3 million TEU in containers.

The plan prioritizes developing three international gateway port clusters: Lach Huyen (north), Cai Mep - Thi Vai (south), and Can Gio (international transshipment), capable of receiving the world's largest container vessels.

To support the port system, the plan proposes completing 5,000 km of expressways and the North-South high-speed railway during 2026-2030, creating a complete multimodal connectivity network.

The plan also emphasizes transitioning from traditional river port models to deep-water port clusters receiving ultra-large vessels, reflecting the global trend of increasing container ship sizes.
