Vietnam Commits to 20% Maritime Emissions Reduction by 2030

The Vietnamese government targets 20% shipping emissions reduction by 2030, deploying green ports and clean fleet initiatives aligned with IMO standards.

The Vietnamese government has issued a sustainable maritime development strategy targeting a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from shipping activities by 2030, working toward IMO emission standards by 2050.

The strategy focuses on three pillars: transitioning to clean fuels for the domestic fleet, installing onshore power supply systems at major berths, and implementing green port planning with CO2 and NOx reduction criteria at key container ports.

From 2031, Vietnam will undertake large-scale decarbonization of the port system, including converting forklifts and tractors to electric/hybrid engines and researching green hydrogen fuel applications.

Experts assess that this strategy not only meets international requirements but also creates competitive advantages for Vietnamese ports, as major shipping lines increasingly prioritize green logistics chains.
