5G and Digital Twin Applications in Vietnam Smart Port Development
Vietnam pilots 5G and digital twin technology at major ports, paving the way for comprehensive automation with AGVs and real-time crane monitoring.
During 2026-2030, the Ministry of Science and Technology is coordinating with port management units to deploy 5G connectivity and fiber-optic infrastructure upgrades at key ports, starting with Lach Huyen port.
5G technology enables high-speed data transmission with ultra-low latency — a critical factor for operating remote-controlled crane systems, autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs), and real-time terminal safety monitoring.
Digital Twin systems create precise 3D models of entire ports, enabling operational scenario simulation, container flow optimization, and bottleneck prediction before they occur.
At least two cities will pilot smart operation centers integrating IoT during 2026-2028. Vietnam's IoT in transportation market is projected at $778.58 million in 2025, growing to $2.88 billion by 2034.
