Vietnam Receives First 24,000 TEU Container Vessel at Cai Mep Port
For the first time in history, a 24,000 TEU ultra-large container vessel calls at Cai Mep - Thi Vai port, confirming Vietnam's ability to handle the world's largest vessels.
The Cai Mep - Thi Vai port cluster has successfully received a 24,000 TEU ultra-large container vessel for the first time in history, marking Vietnam's port system capability to handle the world's largest ships.
This event confirms the results of infrastructure investment upgrades in berths, channels, and handling equipment at Cai Mep - Thi Vai throughout 2020-2025, with total investment exceeding $2 billion.
Major shipping lines including Maersk, MSC, and CMA CGM have all expressed interest in adding large mother vessel routes calling at Cai Mep, thanks to its natural 14-meter deep channel requiring no dredging and favorable geographic position on the Asia-Europe shipping route.
Receiving 24,000 TEU vessels enables Vietnam to compete directly with major regional transshipment ports, reduce logistics costs for import-export businesses, and attract additional international shipping routes.
